Muscadine grape varieties grow best in southern climates (zones 7-9) and will fail to ripen in your zone 5 garden. Try one of the American Hybrids, instead, such as Blue Lake, Buffalo or Beta. These are all blue-black grapes with spicy flavors, not quite like Muscadine, but close!
