Planted your hollyhock seeds about two years ago. First year, nice plants, no flowers. Second year, beautiful plants with many colors, yellow, pink, red, etc. This year, all but one plant of about twenty are VERY deep purple, almost black. The remaining plant is light pink. What happened?

My thought is that the "black" hollyhocks are longer-lived than the other shades. Hollyhock species are generally a short-lived perennial, some are only biennials (two year life cycle: 1st year juvenile, 2nd year, mature/bloom). If you know for sure that the same plants that had different colored blooms have come back to blossom black this year, please send us another question, and I'll forward it to Burpee.

In 51 years of growing flowers, I found that every new year you will never know what color of blooms your'e going to get on your hollyhocks!
