The Q&A Archives: Asparagus for Arizona

Question: What variety of asparagus is best for our desert climate and when is the best time to plant them? Steve Pedersen Peoria, AZ

Answer: You should be a able to grow most varieties; the old standby, Mary Washington, or the newer Jersey King varieties are good choices. Or it's always fun to ask your neighbors what has grown best for them. Plant asparagus crowns in early spring -- for you perhaps as early as February. Choose a sunny spot, and be sure to take some time to prepare the soil in the bed -- hopefully, your asparagus planting will last for years, even decades!
