I have heard conflicting information about caring for Gardenias in California. Does a Gardenia need full sun here, or is partial sun acceptable? Also, is regular tap water suitable for a Gardenia?

You didn't indicate whether you're in northern or southern California and that distinction would make a big difference when planting a gardenia. Give it filtered afternoon shade if you're in a hot valley. If you're on the coast, or where the weather is mild in the southern part of the state, full sun is fine. To help your gardenia thrive, provide warmth, regular water (tap water is fine), good soil drainage, morning misting and feed regularly with a liquid fish emulsion.
