Is it necessary to deadhead verbena? Also, how can I tell if the red verbena I planted is an annual or a perennial?

Verbena looks best if you pinch back young plants and deadhead regularly during the season. Most verbena are perennial plants and the annual kinds will self-sow if you stop deadheading towards the end of the summer to allow seedheads to form.
