After our zucchini fruits sprout, they die, wither and rot after about only 2 inches of growth. What may be causing this, or what should we do to prevent it from happening? |
Poor pollination can result in fruit drop. Cool, rainy, windy weather can keep insects away, and very hot weather can render pollen sterile. So, if weather conditions have been extreme, the crop will be affected. A closely related problem, especially if the fruits are withering from the blossom end toward the stem, is blossom-end rot. This condition is caused by wide fluctuations between wet and dry soils. To prevent the problem, water deeply and mulch the soil surface to help retard evaporation. |
