The Q&A Archives: Controlling Bind Weed

Question: We have bind weed in a perennial flower garden. Is there a non-toxic way to prevent its return? We've seen a product called WOW in the Gardens Alive catalog which seems to be a nitrogen based weed and feed product made from corn syrup. Would this work? Thanks. Waring Fincke West Bend, WI

Answer: I believe WOW is a pre-emergent weed killer and don't know if it is registered for use on bindweed. You'll have to give Gardens Alive a call on that one. To control bindweed, repeated cultivation and pulling is the surest bet. You can exhaust the roots by continuous cutting it down at least 3-4 times during the summer. Also, mulching the area with plastic may kill the plants if you can sacrifice the garden area. There is another organic weed control porduct on the market called 'Weed Eraser' which should be available in garden centers this spring from Security Products in Phoenix, AZ. You spray this one on the plant similar to Roundup, but it doesn't contain the same chemicals as Roundup and is less hazardous.
