I have a good amount of beans that appear to be ready, but when I took one off it was still mushy on the inside. How can I tell when they are ready? I understand that I should harvest often to get the best yield.

Experience is probably the best teacher when it comes to harvesting veggies of all kinds. Beans should be harvested frequently; if you allow the pods to ripen fully the plant will stop producing and die. Harvest beans when they are pencil-size, tender, and before the seeds inside form bumps on the pod.
