The Q&A Archives: Harvesting Butternut Squash

Question: I see conflicting harvesting info about Butternut Squash, before or after frost. Please clarify specifically for Butternut Squash.

Answer: The rule of thumb is to allow winter squash to ripen fully on the vine. Their skin should be hard--difficult to puncture with your fingernail. They can withstand an early cold snap, but should be brought in before a hard freeze, which can damage skin. When you harvest, leave a few inches of the vine attached.
