I see conflicting harvesting info about Butternut Squash, before or after frost. Please clarify specifically for Butternut Squash.

The rule of thumb is to allow winter squash to ripen fully on the vine. Their skin should be hard--difficult to puncture with your fingernail. They can withstand an early cold snap, but should be brought in before a hard freeze, which can damage skin. When you harvest, leave a few inches of the vine attached.
