The Q&A Archives: Keeping Compost Piles

Question: My question is about compost - most directions tell you what to put in, how to layer, water

Answer: Many gardeners do just that--keep two compost piles. Have one "active" pile that you are continuously adding new material to, and another which is "finishing". (You'll still have to turn both piles and keep an eye on moisture levels.) When the older pile is "finished"--black and crumbly with little plant residue visible--spread the compost and begin a new pile for your fresh material, letting the other one finish and starting a new pile in the old one's place.
