The Q&A Archives: brown leaves tomato plants

Question: Leaves on tomato plants have turned brown and have dried up. when I cut a stem off there is a black line in the cross section. the weather has been very hot and dry, but I do water. can you tell me what the conditin is and is there anything that can be done?

Answer: The symptoms you describe may be present in cases of both fusarium or verticillium wilt. The best way to avoid these is to plant resistant varieties, rotate your crops regularly, and clean up and destroy any debris from the infected plants. You might wish to consult with your County Extension (825-1701) for a more definite diagnosis.
