The Q&A Archives: Controlling Green Streaks on Tomatoes

Question: Last year my Chicago suburb tomatoes ripened with green streaks and were hard and inedible. Jean Parker Naperville, IL

Answer: The hard, green streaks in your tomatoes is called uneven ripening which is due to cool weather conditions at ripening. You can try to grow other varieties that tend to have less of this condition such as 'Big Beef' or 'Celebrity'. Keep the plant growing well with adequate water and fertilizing and start early so the fruits ripen while the weather is still warm. Short of talking to Mother Nature, that's all you can do.
