How do you tell when a Charentais melon is ripe? I have had 2 split open that were ripe, but I didn't know it before hand.

It's not easy to tell when a melon is dead-ripe, but when it's almost ready to harvest you'll begin to notice small cracks along the stem where the melon is attached to the vine. When the stem starts to shrivel a bit, pick the melon up and give it a twist. If it slips easily, it's ready to harvest. If not, leave it alone for a few days and try again.
