Can leaf lettuce be planted for a fall crop? I have extra space in my garden from spring crops I've already harvested. When should it be planted or can it be planted anytime? |
Lettuce planted in the heat of mid-summer is likely to bolt and go to seed in a hurry. What you may be able to harvest will probably taste bitter because of the heat. Wait until about six weeks before your first expected frost date and plant another batch of lettuce seeds. The plants will mature during the cooler fall weather, and provide tender leaves for tasty salads. |
