In order to prevent cutworms attacking my tomatos and pepper plants I spread and mixed into the soil GRUBEX when the plants were first planted. They are doing great but more experienced gardeners are cautioning me about the potential contamination of the produce. they look great and are ready for picking soon. The question is,"Is contamination a real point of concern inthis insance?"

I'm sorry for the delay with my answer. The most important thing to do when using any pest control product is to read and follow the label instructions. EPA approved pest controls must list on the label how soon after application of the material it is safe to harvest and eat produce. So, provided the produce is listed for use against cut worms in vegetable crops, you can simply follow the guidelines on the label. If the product is labeled "not for use on food crops," or cutworms aren't one of the insects it is said to control, then I suggest you contact the product manufacturer for guidance.

We gardeners are a varied lot, and have differing values, knowledge and needs. This is what guides us in all our pursuits, not just gardening. Some of us prefer not to use "chemicals" in our gardens, while others feel comfortable using EPA approved synthetic substances. The more experienced gardeners who advised you in this case may be inclined to use organic practices to avoid any chance of contamination of their food, water and soil with synthetic poisons, and want to protect you from the same perceived dangers. You must trust your own values and judgement, based on sound information -- reading, discussions with others, and asking questions like these! We're happy to help whenever we can. I hope this answers your question -- have a great gardening season!
