The Q&A Archives: Dividing Black Eyed Susan

Question: Is it okay to separate black eye susan during summer when it's blooming, and will they thrive in a container?

Answer: Dividing flowering plants in the middle of summer can really stress them beyond their ability to recover. It would be better to wait until fall after they've stopped blooming or divide the clumps in the early spring, just as new growth is beginning. Black Eyed Susan's will readily adapt to growing in containers.
