How can I seperate and replant hens and chicks that are too big where they are planted at? Some are even growing straight up. |
Hens and chicks are fairly easy to divide and replant. Simply (using your hands) pull the individual smaller chicks away from the bigger hens. On the underside you will find a bit of root or stem. When you reset the chick, loosen the soil and set the plant firmly on top of it so that the root or stem is in good contact with the soil. Water and you're done! You can also use a trowel to dig up clumps of any size you want and then replant in a new spot. Be careful not to plant these any deeper than they grew before or they may be too deep and rot. Although it may look like some are growing straight up, it is probably a case of the largest mature plants coming into "flower". You may find that the largest of the plants die after flowering, but the next generation will fill in the resulting space nicely. |
