| My phlox spreads to about a 2 ft. circle before winter and looks healthy, but doesn't survive to bloom well the next spring. Should I protect it somehow? The other perennials in the garden do fine without protection. |
| Phlox subulata should be winter-hardy in your region. If it is not surviving, I'd suspect the soil doesn't drain as quickly as the plants require and the roots are rotting. Try digging some up and planting it in a pot or in a bed with better drainage. Surviving plants will indicate the soil in the original bed is too soggy for your phlox.
