The Q&A Archives: Soapberry Bug (a.k.a. Boxelder Beetle)

Question: We have a"Soapberry Bug" here that looks very much like the Boxelder bug. The Agriculture Department says it's an import and eats the seed of the golden rain tree (or the boxelder tree). Do you have these creatures in your area? Harriet Fullerton, CA

Answer: We definitely have the boxelder beetle in our area, but I'm not sure about the "soapberry bug". The boxelder beetle isn't too much of a concern because the boxelder isn't a desirable tree in these parts. However, you might ask your Extension agent about recommended ways to control the soapberry bug in your area.
