The Q&A Archives: Information on Mexican Palo Verde

Question: I was in Arizona last weekend and saw a tree that they said was the "Palo Verde". Is this the proper name for the tree and also do you have any information on it? It's totally green including the bark in the spring and I'm told that it turns brown in the summer. I'd appreciate any information. Mary Ann Gass West Des Moines, IA

Answer: You probably saw the Mexican Palo Verde in Arizona (Parkinsonia aculeata). It has yellow-green bark and grows to 30 feet tall in the Southwest. Check the Sunset Western Garden Book in a bookstore for information on this tree. Unfortunately, it is not aplant to try in Iowa!
