The Q&A Archives: Sour Tomatoes

Question: My salad tomatoes are growing in pots on my patio. The plants & tomatoes look great! The first two that have finally ripened on the vine have a tough skin and are really very sour. What can I do to remedy this?

Answer: To some extent the flavor depends on the variety you are growing and on the degree of ripeness, so there may not be too much you can do besides waiting to be sure the tomatoes are fully ripe before you pick them. (Some varieties are an orange-red when ready but others are a very deep fire-engine red when ready.) In addition, make sure the plants are receiving enough water -- in the heat of the summer these plants may need daily watering.
