The Q&A Archives: Danger of Planting Eucalyptus Near a Water Main

Question: I wish to plant eucalyptus trees close to the main water line that runs on our property, will the roots of these trees damage the water line (PVC pipe)? Thanks. Dori Bole Hollister, CA

Answer: You're running an awful risk planting eucalyptis near a water main. The roots are very aggressive about seeking out water and eventually may harm the pipes. I'd plant it in another location if possible, just to be on the safe side.
