The Q&A Archives: Hosta Demise

Question: Why are hostas large and nice and then next year they are smaller and just seem to fade away?

Answer: That's certainly strange behavior for a hosta! Normally they form clumps and need to be divided every few years. Hostas are shade-loving plants and thrive in rich, moist soil. You may want to try amending your soil with peat moss to increase the acidity, and also to help the soil retain moisture. Give your plants regular summer water and feed every 3-4 weeks with a liquid fertilizer to keep the foliage lush and green.
