In some cases it is possible to use a thin piece of wire inserted in the hole to kill the borer larvae. You may also wish to contact your local County Extension for the most up to date chemical control recommendations and appropriate application schedule for your local area. In the meantime, healthy trees withstand the damage best so do what you can to keep the tree healthy otherwise.
