My back yard has many sunken spots and holes. Can I just fill these holes with sand (covering the grass) and the grass will grow though?

If your soil is a clay type as many in the Houston area are, filling low areas with sand may create droughty areas in the turf. Most turf experts agree that is it best to fill holes or low spots with a soil type similar to the soil in your yard.

Bermudagrass and most zoysias will grow through the fill soil. St. Augustine and centipede will not grow through more than an inch or two at the very most, but will fill in from grass growing in from the sides of the hole.
