When is the best time to transplant Iris and Daylilies? How do I go about doing it? |
Bearded iris are best transplanted in mid to late summer. Dig them up gently and sort out the healthiest rhizomes for replanting. Trim back the foliage to just a few inches. Label them by writing on the foliage with a marker. Replant into a prepared bed with plenty of organic matter worked in. Iris need rich soil with good drainage and full sun. Replant by making a ridge of soil with a slight trench on each side and setting the rhizome along ridge, allowing the roots to drape over the edges into the trench on each side. Barely cover the rhizomes with soil and water in well. Mulch around (but not over them) and keep the area weeded. Daylilies can be transplanted almost anytime in the growing season as long as you are careful, but late summer is a good time to do it. Water the plant well the day before, then dig it up and replant it immediately at the same depth as it was growing before. Water it in well and mulch. Keep an eye on the water until the plant is reestablished. |
