I'm planning to select a white/pink flowering tree to plant on the front lawn. Which ornamental pears, cherries, or plums produce little or no fruit? I'm concerned about messy fruit on the sidewalk and driveway. Is the Cleveland Select Pear (Pyrus) a good choice? |
Ornamental cherry trees are my favorite pink flowers in the springtime. Prunus yeodoensis (Yoshino Flowering Cherry), or Prunus yedoensis 'Akebono' (a smaller form) are attractive trees with interesting branch shape. Ornamental pear trees flower in white and have the added attraction of reddish leaves in the autumn. Pyrus pyrifolia (Sand Pear), and Pyrys kawakamii (Evergreen Pear) will both do well in your gardening region. Pyrus calleryana `Chanticleer' (Chanticleer Callery Pear or Cleveland Select Callery Pear)is an attractive ornamental tree that is very hardy. It's commonly planted as a street tree because of it's compact growing habit. Hope this information helps you select just the right ornamental tree for your landscape! |
