The Q&A Archives: Reasons for "Mushy" Aloe Vera

Question: I have an indoor aloe vera plant which produces new growth, however it always becomes wilted and dies. It almost seems like the growth becomes "soggy" and "mushy" instead of nice and firm like a healthy plant. Am I watering the plant too much? How do Itake care of this plant? Amber Ridgely Chesapeake, VA

Answer: Aloe vera likes a well drained soil (1 part standard potting mix and 2 parts sand). Water moderately in summer, hardly at all in winter. Soak thoroughly but let soil dry between waterings. I suspect your are overwatering. If the plant looks shriveled then it needs water, otherwise don't water.
