The Q&A Archives: Some Bird Favorites

Question: We recently lost several tall trees in an area of our woods. We would like to plant bushes or shrubs that would be a screen from our neighbors but have berries or otherwise benefit the bird population. We have heavy soil that is often moist. The area will get only a few hours of direct sun. Thank you. Marian Young Skillman, NJ

Answer: Try Ilex verticillata (winterberry). This plant does well in wet soils and partial shade. Birds like the red berries. It can grow from 4-8 ft. tall depending on the site. Sexes are on separate plants, so be sure to plant both a male and female for pollination. There are several hybrids available so check with your local nursery or contact, Carroll Gardens 444 East Main St. Westminster, MD 21157 800-638-6334
