I see Virginia bluebells in catalogs and love them. Would I be wasting my money and killing them if I tried to grow them in Little Rock where our summers are usually beastly hot?

These plants (Mertensia virginica) can be grown in climates as cold as USDA zone 3 and as warm as USDA zone 9, so you should be able to grow them. One reason they may be so versatile is that they go completely dormant every summer, so don't be shocked when they "disappear" soon after blooming.
