The Q&A Archives: Deterring Squirrels from Digging Bulbs

Question: How can I safely keep out squirrels from digging up my bulbs? Kathy Caruso Lodi, NJ

Answer: Squirrels are pesky aren't they! You can try home remedies such as moth balls, cayenne pepper flakes and garlic in the holes or try crushing egg shells and placing them in the holes when planting. The squirrels don't like the sharp egg shells on their paws. There are many commercial sprays such as Hinder and Ropel that will work for awhile, at least until the tulips bloom I hope, before they wear off. A good cat is always a consideration too!!!
