In general the best times for planting are spring and fall when the weather is mild and there is ample natural rainfall. Bareroot plants are best planted in early spring and that is when they are usually available for sale. Container grown plants however can be planted any time the ground can be dug. Newly planted shrubs should be watered carefully for the first year no matter when they are planted. Pussy willows in particular will establish fastest in a moist soil and will also benefit from a few inches of organic mulch placed over the root zone (but not up against the trunk).
