The Q&A Archives: Growing Moss

Question: Somebody recently told me that moss roses can be grown in containers. If true, how extensive are their root systems (and how large a container would be needed)? Any information would be appreciated; I've found nothing in my gardening books. Barbara Longo Watertown, MA

Answer: You can grow moss rose and many other types in 1/2 whiskey barrel containers. However, they need extra watering, fertilizing and special attention in winter to help them survive. You'll have to bury them in leaves, straw or compost outside or move them to an unheated basement in late fall to help them survive the winter cold.
