The Japanese beetles have been especially bad this year, and they're taking a toll on my garden. Is there a homemade, nonhazardous remedy to get rid of these bugs?

Unfortunately I don't know of a home-made remedy except for handpicking them. Other less hazardous controls include the pheromone lures (best placed far from your garden as they may attract more than they catch) as well as the recently introduced products containing neem oil applied according to the label instructions.
