Can I fertilize my azaleas in August or September? They have been neglected for a long time and want to get some root growth. Will it hurt them?

Fertilizer promotes plant growth so it's best to avoid late fall and early winter applications when frost could kill back new shoots. You can safely fertilize in late summer, using a 5-10-10 (or similar formulation low in nitrogen), because the new growth will still have time to harden off before winter arrives.
