I am moving into a new house and have many areas that need planting. My main concerns are what to plant in very shady areas and, enclosed patios with planters. The areas I am concerned with are 3 25 ft planters in enclosed patios, 2 50 ft planters in very shady areas, and a 10 by 20 ft area in an enclosed entry way. Thank you for any help. |
There are lots and lots of plants that will thrive in varying degrees of shade in your gardening region. One very important consideration is filling your planters and beds with good soil amended with lots of organic matter to help retain moisture. (Most shade-loving plants like moist conditions.) For a list of possibilities, plus cultural requirements of each, Sunset Western Garden Book is an excellent reference. A well-stocked library or bookstore should have a copy. It's published by Sunset in Menlo Park, ISBN# 0-376-03851-9. Good luck with your new garden! |
