The Q&A Archives: Groundcovers for Hillsides

Question: I have a hillside close to my house and it is very steep and difficult to mow and take care of in the spring and summer. I want to know what type of plant can I get that will spread and cover this hillside so I can enjoy flowers and the beauty of not having to labor on this hillside. Don Lemley Milton, WV

Answer: Here are some suggestions for ground covers you might use: Aegopodium (goutweed), Ajuga (bugleweed), Arctostaphylos (kinnikinnick), Euonymus, English Ivy, Wilton carpet juniper, Mahonia, Pachysandra, Sedum, or Vinca (periwinkle). You can also seed crownvetch on the hillside and it will take over, hold the hill and flower in midsummer. It can actually be invasive, you grow it with caution.
