I have planted an odgen or is it ogen melon which originates from Israel. I have looked in many of the gardening books and have not found any information. Can you give me any information on what the melon looks like and when it is ripe enough to pick and eat? |
Galia melon has green flesh, and is a thin-skinned relative of the muskmelon. Originally developed on an Israeli kibbutz, the Ogen melon is slightly oval, with muted green striping and a sweet taste. Galia is one of the standards for a Mid-East type melon. The fruits are firm, with light netting; the flesh is the color of a kiwi fruit, and very sweet with a flavor some say is reminiscent of bananas. Will ripen in 75 days. As with most melons, the fruit will be fragrant when ripe and will slip from the vine when mature. Pick the melon up and if the stem falls away from the fruit, it's ripe. If not, put it back down and try again in a day or two. |
