We are building a large room on the south side of our house; at one end there will be a flower bed that will get east, south, and west light. Can you suggest some plants and flowers?

What a wonderful room! You might try experimenting with annuals such as browalia, coleus and impatiens, as well as some tropicals such as the jasmines, passion flower and mandevilla vines, and some perennials such as violas, snapdragons, and fibrous begonias. African violets should also do well. Depending on the temperature range you may find that either cool season plants or tropicals do better. Also, you may want to use pots and tubs for your plants rather than an actual bed of soil; my thought here is that you might end up with disease problems, and you may experience problems when it comes time to replace and renew the soil periodically.
