The Q&A Archives: Information on Crimson King' Clematis

Question: I have a Crimson King' clematis. I can't seem to find any information about this variety of clematis. Other than my need for general information about this plant, can you tell me if it needs to be pruned? If so, when and how? Thanks! Marion Bennardello Highland, NY

Answer: I believe 'Crimson King' is a large-flowered jackmanii-type clematis variety that probably blooms in midsummer onward. I'd prune it in spring to a height of about 2-3 feet tall. Of course remove any dead or broken branches anytime. If your variety blooms before midsummer, then don't bloom in spring, but after flowering in summer.
