The Q&A Archives: Harvesting Asparagus

Question: Can I pick all asparagus spears that appear or must I allow a certain amount grow into fern. Any other tips on growing and harvesting asparagus would be appreciated. Thank you. Michael Bosco Staten Island, NY

Answer: Picking asparagus depends on the age of the bed. You should wait two years if you started with new crowns and three years if you started with seeds. Pick only the thicker spears, the diameter of your thumb. Keep the beds as weeds free as possible and side dress after harvesting with 10-10-10 fertilizer. Asparagus like a neutral pH. In late fall cut down all foliage and compost it.
