The Q&A Archives: Dates to Plant Outdoors in MA

Question: I have two questions. In Massachusetts, when is the best time two plant seedlings, (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) and not worry about frosts? When can you plant seeds in the ground and not worry about frosts? Sean Davies Melrose, MA

Answer: Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are all warm weather plants; they like warm soil and warm growing conditions. In your growing zone by May 15th you can probably plant either seeds or seedlings. Don't rush if the nights are still getting into the 40F, because the tomatoes ... don't like chilly weather.
