Please tell me if I can transplant my forsythia and two burning bushes now, given the drought we've had in New Jersey? Also, will the move affect the color this fall and the flowers in the spring? |
Usually, fall is an excellent time to transplant shrubs like these, as is very early spring. If the plants have been severely stressed by drought and the soil is still dry it may be better to wait until spring because transplanting is also a stressful event for plants. Do wait until there is adequate soil moisture before you move them. The color would not be affected by a move because it is already formed; the blooms however would be affected. If you trim back the shrub to compensate for root loss as recommended you will remove blooms. |
