The Q&A Archives: Bringing Annuals Indoors

Question: Will coleus, and petunias survive in buckets in the house over the winter? How about geraniums.Do they
need any special care.

Answer: In general, coleus will do well as a houseplant on a sunny windowsill and the geraniums will tolerate indoor life, but the petunias sulk for lack of light. You will need to acclimate them gradually to indoor light levels by moving them into shadier locations over a period of weeks, then bring them indoors and set them in the brightest location you have. Reduce watering and fertilizing as they slow down with the change in seasonal light. Check them very carefully for pests before you bring them indoors. Next spring, do the same thing in reverse to avoid "sun burning" them.
