What type of soil is best for growing strawberries? We have clay soil that is slightly alkaline due to the use of mushroom compost. |
Strawberries require an acid soil with a pH between 5 and 6. They also need a very rich, well drained soil with copious amounts of organic material; ideally you would provide a light rich loam. You might want to work with your County Extension (287-4761) to determine the best amendments to add to bring your soil into acceptable condition for growing strawberries. In general it is always a good idea to add ample quantitites of organic matter and just a small amount of sand to improve clay. You may also find slightly raised beds to be helpful. Good luck with your strawberries! |
