The Q&A Archives: Geminating Gourd Seeds

Question: I am trying to start large gourds indoors by seed. I cannot get the seeds to germinate. The seeds are kept moist and warm, but not one Burpee seed has grown in four weeks. The Burpee squash (three different varieties) have germinated and grown fine. Do you have a suggestion? Thank you. Fred Thompson Walnut Creek, CA

Answer: Gourd seeds can take up to two weeks to germinate, much slower than squashes. They will emerge faster if you soak them in warm water for 48 hours. There is also the possibility that you have bad seeds. Always use fresh seed if you have problems with germination.
