I am looking for a ground cover to plant in a large (30" x 50') bed in which I have iris planted. I would like a ground cover that would not be so aggressive as to crowd out the iris but would keep out all or most of the weeds.

Although in theory this sounds like a good idea, in my experience it would be a mistake. The reason I say this is that iris tends to rot if anything grows and shades and keeps moisture near the rhizomes. Unfortunately, this is why keeping the iris bed well weeded is so important in the first place. You might try several inches of organic mulch around but not atop the iris instead.
