| Can I plant spring bulbs in containers and would I start them in the fall as I would if I am planting in the ground? If I can plant in containers which plants would do best. |
| It is possible to plant spring bulbs in containers if you have a way to allow them to undergo the needed "chilling period" yet protect them from extreme cold over the winter. If they are above ground odds are that they will freeze to death. One method is to sink the containers in the ground, another is to insulate them by heaping mulch around them, another is to put them in a cold frame. Also, be sure to use a well drained potting mix and protect them from rodents. Nearly any of the spring bulbs can be handled this way, but I would suggest using some of the less expensive types at first until you are sure you have a satisfactory method of wintering them. Crocus and tulips seem to do especially well in pots. |
