what is a good bug spray to use on black eye susans and coneflowers that won't harm them.

The answer to your question really depends on which insect exactly is causing the problem. However, if it seems to be the Japanese beetle which is a frequent pest on these plants, you might try using a neem-based spray to control them. Hand picking is also an option. For a more definite identification of the pest and suggested controls for it, you might wish to take a sample to your County Extension (678-7807) and ask for assistance.
