| I have a 13th floor, south-facing balcony in New York City and would like to grow some vines in containers to grow along my railing. Can you suggest anything that could stand the summer sun, drying wind, and winter chill and quickly cover my railing too? |
| Two possibilities among perennials are a native honeysuckle such as Lonicera sempervirens and trumpet creeper, Campsis radicans. Keep in mind that these are large plants and will need large containers to grow their best. They will also need to have their roots well insulated to survive the winter. Since it sounds like your balcony may work like a heat trap, you might also consider some of the annual vines such as morning glories and moon flowers which originally hail from the tropics and don't mind hot weather.
